NCPTA subscription linked insurance - an overview
Membership of the NCPTA (from just Ł61 per annum) automatically provides comprehensive subscription linked insurance for your association (updated September 2010)
Membership of the NCPTA automatically provides comprehensive subscription linked insurance for your association. PTAs should not be running events without adequate insurance cover in place; NCPTA’s subscription linked cover has been tailored to satisfy the essential insurance needs of PTAs and fully meets, and in some cases exceeds, local authority requirements. Please refer to the full policy summary for the conditions of the policy with which elected committee members must adhere to for cover to apply. The subscription linked policy includes:
Public liability
Public liability cover protects the association, its elected officers and committee members against their legal liability for injury or death to any third party and/or damage to their property as a result of their negligence. The indemnity limit is £10 million for any one incident. The cover within this section of the policy is specifically designed for PTAs and is therefore much more comprehensive than a standard liability policy. All PTA run events are covered on a worldwide basis; your PTA is therefore not restricted to holding events on school premises only. Please refer to the full Insurance summary section 1 – Public liability for further information and conditions that apply to some events such as bonfire and firework parties and activities taking place in swimming pools
Note: public liability cover does not provide cover for accidental damage to hired/borrowed equipment or for third party liability. Please refer to the NCPTA Information sheet Public liability insurance – service providers, guest entertainers and operators.
Hired or borrowed equipment
The association’s liability for using hired or borrowed equipment is fully covered. Please note that the owner of the equipment is still required to have their own public liability cover in place. Please refer to section 1 Public liability clause 1.4 Service providers, guest entertainers, operators etc of the Insurance summary document and the NCPTA Information sheet Public liability insurance – service providers, guest entertainers and operators.
Trustee indemnity cover
Provided elected committee members (trustees) of the association have authority and have acted honestly and reasonably this section of the policy provides cover for the individual committee member against personal liability when legal claims are made against them. Please refer to section 3 – Trustee indemnity cover (see note 2) for further information.
All-risks cover for PTA owned items
Automatically included as part of the NCPTA’s subscription linked insurance policy is £500 worth of all risk cover (see note 1) for PTA owned items. Details of all items to be insured and their value must be detailed on the membership application form, or the association’s membership renewal documentation (each time your association renews), or notified to NCPTA when purchased. Please see the NCPTA Information sheet Public liability insurance – PTA owned items for more information and section 7.1 All risks cover for PTA purchased equipment of the Insurance summary document.
Personal accident cover
The benefits under this section of the policy apply to:
• The association’s elected officers and committee members whilst on official PTA business
• Any adult member of the association (or any person co-opted) who assists at a PTA event but does not take part in that event (age limits are between 18 and 75 years)
• Children who are members of the association and are assisting but not taking part in the event (age limits are between 5 and 17 years)
Please refer to section 4 – Personal accident cover of the Insurance summary document.
Money cover
This section of the policy provides cover for cash and negotiable documents. Please refer to section 5 – Money cover of the Insurance summary document for details of the limits that apply.
Fidelity guarantee
This provides the association with cover against fraud or dishonesty by the Treasurer or other committee member(s). Please refer to section 6 – Fidelity guarantee for further information.

- The Economic Downturn
In light of the recession the Charity Commission has produced a new resource, a check-list for trustees in the form of 15 questions. it has been written for all charities big and small so not all questions will be relevant to PTAs, it just depends on how you operate.
